Many people are confused about what costume jewellery actually is and so we thought that it would be beneficial to explain this.
In short costume jewellery, is jewellery that is readily available to everyone. This means that dressing up and feeling glamorous, doesn’t just have to be for the rich and famous.
A bit of costume jewellery history
Costume jewellery as we know it dates back to the early 1900s and is generally used to compliment an outfit or a ‘costume’.
Costume jewellery is comprised of replica gemstones like cubic zirconium (to mimic diamonds) which is then set in metals like nickel, brass, pewter or silver. During economic hard times, further downgraded stones and metals were used. These days you can expect the same materials to be used but as advances have been made plastic, acrylic, leather or wood have also been used.
Throughout history different periods have had a style all of their own.
During the 20s and 30s Art Deco took costume jewellery to new heights, by taking mass production and working in design and artistic elements. Coco Chanel also began using costume jewellery to complete her looks.
After the depression natural materials merged with plastics and the Retro Age was born. Think big and bold, flowers, bows, moon stones, horse motifs, ballerinas mixed with military, elegance and glamour…if you can.
Following World War II things took a more traditional and understated turn. The jewellery was full of rhinestones, charm bracelets, jade, opal, topaz and anything do with Christmas.

Costume jewellery obviously goes back further and has been a big part of our culture for around 300 years. Jewellery during the 1700 was made of glass and then the 1800 saw the introduction of semi precious stones. Costume jewellery’s turning point has to have been in the mid 1900s, when jewellery started to become truly beautiful and desired. The majority of heir loomed jewellery is from this era, symbolising a change in the production of jewellery and the attention to detail, making these pieces timeless and dearly loved.
