5 Proposal Mistakes You Should Avoid

Proposal Mistakes

While there are plenty of recommended ways to propose, there are just as many ways not to pop the question. Make sure that when the time comes to get down on one knee, you are clued up on wedding proposal dos and don’ts.

1. Don’t Do It in Front of an Audience

Proposing in front of an audience puts unfair pressure on the person to say yes. This is a life-changing decision you’re asking them to make, so they need to have as much breathing room as possible.

2. Avoid Involving Food or Drinks

Many a romantic movie has recreated this scene: a diamond ring tucked into a chocolate brownie or tinkering at the bottom of a glass of champagne. Placing the ring inside food or a drink is unhygienic, could cause a chipped tooth or even be swallowed, and not to mention it’s terribly clichéd.

3. Don’t Rely on Someone Else

Relying on a sign writer to neatly craft “will you marry me” in an obscure location can be costly and stressful. At the end of the day, the proposal is about you and your future partner spending your life together. Keep it simple, personal, and from the heart.

4. Don’t Use An Old Girlfriend’s Ring

If you had no luck proposing to an ex-girlfriend in the past, do your current girlfriend a favour and don’t propose with the same ring. Not only is this extremely unsentimental, but it will be pretty devastating for your bride-to-be if she found out.

5. Don’t Propose Over the Phone

Even if you and your partner are in a long-distance relationship, proposing over the phone will take the romance right out of the proposal, and your partner might even think you’re joking!
